The direction is strongly influenced by the materials I have on hand. I have learned over the years that when that I get a strong feeling from material I pick it up or I know I will be sorry I didn't. What is it when we get these feelings towards material things, whether it is a pebble on the beach, interesting piece of wood or any unusual object? It is of no monetary value yet it can be one of our most cherished possessions. What are we ourselves but pebbles in the universe, or a grain of sand on the beach? Well, we won't get too spiritual. So here's the point I was getting at in around about way with the sticks and stone stuff.
When I work on a sculpture I have to get feedback from the work. I have to feel an energy from it, like that one pebble on the beach that stands out from the others, or it is just a piece of material perhaps pleasing to the eye but lacking in energy.
It's all about going with our feelings and responses whether towards art or any thing else in life - your gut feeling, its yours, use it.
Here I want to show you some work in progress and how it develops along the way to completion or perhaps go in another direction from my original concept of the work. I always welcome the unexpected and am open to move in a new direction with a work. Sometimes a piece will be around for quite some time before it is resolved.
